Everyone who has dealt with ONIX files will tell you the same thing: after overcoming the complexities of the ONIX norms, the next problem isn’t sending the ONIX file to your business partners, but rather to have them receive the accompanying files. Picture of the cover, first chapter in pdf format, audio interview with the author, complete book in ePub format . . . but with ONIXEDIT all these types of files can be associated easily with an ONIX file. But unlike preparing a document in Word, PowerPoint, Quark, or InDesign, when you are workin on an ONIX document the contents of most of these file types cannot be included. These external files are only referenced by their access paths, for example using a <MediaFileLink> tag:

<MediaFileLink>
        C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents\Books\Book1\cover.jpg
</MediaFileLink>

This is to say that, when you send your ONIX file by email or by FTP, your images, audio or video bites, and also your pdf and ePub files are not transferred! You have to do this work yourself, manually. And even if you manage to recover all your files and connect them in an archive, how can you be positive you haven’t forgotten anything? How can you be sure that there aren’t two files with the same name? How can your business partner work out how to associate the right image with the right title? How can you be certain that an image is neither too big nor too small to be published on the web?

In my opinion, you have a lot of other things to think about besides all these questions. This is the reason why ONIXEDIT Pro version takes charge of your external files attached to your ONIX files. These files can now be transferred automaticaly into your private media space on the internet. The following diagram represents the architecture of ONIXEDIT and the position held by the media space:

ONIXEDIT will even modify the referencing of your external files for you once the transfer is cmplete. Thus, the following reference:

<MediaFileLink>
        C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents\Books\Book1\cover.jpg
</MediaFileLink>

will become  a URL link that will be easy for your business partners to access:

<MediaFileLink>

http://www.onixedit.com/MediaSpace/[Crypted_Key]/cover.jpg
</MediaFileLink>

Your file will be available at any time and can be recovered easily by your business partners at any time they find convenient. ONIXEDIT will even verify your images and make sure that they are not too small. If they are too large, the copies transferred to your media space will be reduced automatically.

ONIXEDIT gives you absolute control over what is published in your media space, allowing you to define your preferences regarding the types of files you authorize for transfer:

For example, you can thus choose to publish just the cover designs, but not the full book in your media space.

All users of the ONIXEDIT Pro version, please take advantage of the private media space that we have provided for you. It will help you save time and help both you and your business partners avoid frustrating errors in managing your files.
