Edit default values
Default values are the metadata a catalogue copies into every new title you create in ONIXEDIT Cloud: your publisher name and imprint, the usual language, currency and price composite, a standard supplier, and anything else that repeats from one title to the next. You define them once, in the same entry form you use for a title, and adjust them whenever your business changes.
Where to find it
- Actions dropdown of the title list: Edit default values. The entry is shown only to users who hold the Edit default values right on the current catalogue; sub-users created from Manage Users do not receive that right by default.
- The form opens at
/2.1/product/<catalogue>/defaultor/3.0/product/<catalogue>/default. Opening that address without the right shows Insufficient rights with the message You do not have the rights to edit default values of this catalogue and sends you back to the list. - Default values belong to the catalogue, not to the user: everyone who creates titles in the catalogue receives the same ones. An ONIX 2.1 catalogue and an ONIX 3.0 catalogue each have their own.
Screen overview
The default values form is the entry form with three differences: there is no validation banner and no Refresh Errors button (default values are never validated), the toolbar has an extra Reset default values button (loop icon), and saving keeps you on the form instead of creating a title.
How to define default values
- In the title list, open Actions and choose Edit default values.
- Read the Instructions dialog — "Use the Simplified or Advanced Form to define your default values and save it. Each subsequent new titles will automatically be filled with these default values." — and click OK.
- Pick Simplified Form or Advanced Form in the view selector, as for a title. The Advanced Form gives access to every ONIX element; see Fields and help.
- Fill in the fields you want every new title to start with. Repeating composites work too: add a price, a supplier or a contributor role and it will be present in each new title.
- Open Save options and choose Save this product to save and keep editing, or Save this product and return to the list to save and go back. The green Product saved. message confirms the save.
How to change default values later
- Open Edit default values again: the form loads the current default values of the catalogue.
- Change or empty the fields, then save. Titles created from now on receive the new values; titles that already exist are not touched.
How to clear all default values
- In the default values form, click Reset default values (loop icon) in the toolbar.
- Confirm Do you really want to reset the default values? with Yes. Every field is emptied on screen.
- Save. Until you save, the reset is not stored and closing the form keeps the previous default values.
To clear a single default, empty its field (or remove the composite line) and save.
Which titles receive the default values

The values are copied at creation time. Once in the new title you can change or delete any of them like any other field; the default values themselves stay as you defined them.
Tips
Keep default values generic
Enter only what is true for every new title: publisher, imprint, language, currency, tax rate, supplier. A default ISBN, title or date would be wrong on every title but one, and each new title would start invalid until you fix it.
Sub-catalogues share the default values of their parent
When a catalogue has been created as a sub-catalogue of another one, both use the default values of the parent: saving the default values from either of them updates the parent.
The Save button needs the right
The Save options button stays disabled when you do not hold the Edit default values right on the catalogue, even if you reached the form through its address.
Frequently asked questions
Do default values change the titles I already have?
No. They are copied into a title only at the moment it is created with Add new title. Existing titles, duplicated titles and titles you modify keep their own values.
Are default values applied to imported titles?
Only when the import rules of the catalogue request it; those rules are configured by your administrator outside ONIXEDIT Cloud. Otherwise an imported title keeps exactly the values of the file.
Why do I not see Edit default values in the Actions dropdown?
The entry requires the Edit default values right on the catalogue. Sub-users created from Manage Users do not receive it; ask your administrator.
How do I remove all default values?
Open the default values form, click Reset default values, confirm, then save. The catalogue no longer pre-fills new titles.
